Why does the base matter more than the asphalt?
Asphalt is only a wearing surface. What holds a driveway flat and stops it cracking is the compacted base and the grade underneath, and when a driveway fails early it is almost always the base that gave out, not the asphalt. A thick, expensive top layer on a soft or poorly drained base still fails, so the base is where the money is best spent.
